We were extremely lucky with the weather this year and shortly after lunch on Monday 24th June, the whole school decamped to Kirmington Park for Sports Day. Due to the efforts of one of our parents, a running track had been marked out ready for our races and an ice-cream van had been arranged by the PTFA. Mrs Murray, Mrs Somerscales and Mrs Healy handed out the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cards as each race finished whilst Mrs Lissiack and Mrs Storey awarded the points and handed out stickers to the young athletes.
Mr Marshes organisation and determination to beat the rain, meant that the race card was completed in record time with only minor confusion caused to the score keepers when it was decided to split the nursery children across two races rather than the one on the race list. The children, as always, were extremely well behaved, supporting their teammates so enthusiastically that several of them cheered themselves hoarse.
We had a good turnout of parents, in spite of the weather predictions and although it had begun to spit towards the end of the event, causing the score keepers to resort to umbrella cover to protect the score sheet (and NOT their hair), by and large the weather held off and it was Emerald team who were triumphant when the scores were added up. Each team member received a medal and the sports day cup now wears the green ribbons of the winning team.
The afternoon was finished off with each child and volunteer/staff member having an ice-cream or ice-lolly paid for by the PTFA and then everyone headed back to school, arriving back before the rain hit.
